About Me

My name is Niya Balcheva – raised in Bulgaria, but recently graduated from Utrecht University with a degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics. I currently work in the non-governmental sector related to education, while I navigate my further studies, my aspirations as a competitive debater, and, of course, my activism.

Storytelling

Among the fast-paced chaos that my life is, my greatest passion remains telling stories. They are my first, and probably, my greatest love. I believe telling good stories is all about feeling alive. Words have the power to heal and destroy people, and their power has attracted me ever since I was a kid. However, as every child does, I grew up too – just to discover the intricate world of politics.

Politics

While art has always given me hope and inspiration, politics has confined me to depression more times than I could remember. Yet, over time, I have come to realize my inaction and silence only make the problems I care about worse. Ignorance is the catalyst for all the ugliness I want to erase from this world. I have decided to do anything to not fall victim to it. The power of art makes this possible by giving me hope and inspiration even when I think there is none left.
